Studio 40.jpg
Studio 40 sticker from New Providence.jpg

My name is Judy Carr, and I have been drawing since 2016 as a way to center myself and clear my mind.  I create these sharpie-and-graphite drawings in a semi-meditative state in which I do not think about the end result at all; I simply let the drawing happen and see where my thoughts turn to lines and curves on the paper.  Amazingly, every time, I am delighted by the journey from blank paper and a belly full of stress to a unique piece of art and sense of total relaxation.  I don't focus on the outcome, but on the joy I get from the act of drawing itself. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I enjoy making them!

The name of my gallery, Studio 40, is an homage to my mother, Gloria Schaffer (see picture below), and the plaque business she created and worked during my childhood.  Some of my earliest memories are helping my parents and my brothers with the Studio 40 plaques; it was my job to put in the screw hooks on the top and place the stickers on the back.

In this incarnation of Studio 40, I get to combine two of my passions: drawing and the pursuit of social justice.  From pieces such as "Hate Has No Home Here" to "Justice" to "Joy" to "Rules of the Road", I just want to promote a little more happiness and kindness in the world.

This is what it means to be "Good Art".  Raising awareness and raising spirits.
